O título conta a história de Selene, uma astronauta presa no planeta Atropos após um pouso forçado. A protagonista deve pesquisar a paisagem árida de uma antiga civilização para escapar. Isolada e solitária, ela se vê lutando com unhas e dentes pela sua sobrevivência. Repetidas vezes ela é derrotada – forçada a reiniciar sua jornada sempre que morre. Caracterizado pelos gráficos realistas, aliado ao gameplay de looping temporal — uma curiosa característica em comum nos principais títulos de 2021 — Returnal mostrou todo o poder gráfico de um dos consoles mais poderosos da nova geração. Além de Returnal, os grandes favoritos do público também se deram bem cerimônia: Forza Horizon 5, da Playground Games e Xbox Game Studios, ganhou na categoria “Melhor Jogo Britânico”. It Takes Two e Ratchet & Clank: Em Uma Outra Dimensão ganharam dois prêmios cada, o primeiro como “Melhor Jogo Multiplayer” e “Melhor Propriedade Original”, e o segundo como “Melhor Animação” e “Conquista Técnica”.
